EGF
is a waste education project which works with schools and local community
groups to educate children and adults about Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and composting.
EGF have worked with over 100 schools in Lancashire and encourage all children
to ask their friends, parents and local youth group to start recycling and reducing
the amount of waste they generate. EGF
has provided training courses on these issues for youth and community groups
including scout and guide leaders and has had very positive feedback on the practical
ways that groups and individuals have changed their waste habits e.g. the setting
up of recycling and composting schemes. EGF
has regular special events open to local communities such as the 'Rubbish Racers
Challenge'. Most
of EGF 's resources can be borrowed by community groups through the Equipment
Loans Scheme and instruction is provided through our training programme. EGF
has lots of popular activities for use with primary and secondary schools and
community groups. These
include:
| | The
Waste Audit - time for schools to look at what they throw away every week
- a messy but very worthwhile activity! We use this as a basis for schools to
make an action plan on how to reduce their waste and recycle more, with all children
in the school getting involved. | | | Wigglebert
the Worm our composting puppet show, much loved by younger (and older!) children
who are keen to know more about what they can put in their compost bin. |
| | Back
to the Present - a challenge for pupils to come up with an action plan to
save the earth from global warming, pollution and habitat destruction. |
| | Who
Wants to be a Rubbishaire - a quiz testing knowledge on all aspects of the
three R's and waste. | | | The
Waste Game - pupils are tested on their knowledge of the three R's. |
EGF's
work is a result of the partnership between Lancashire Wildlife Trust and Lancashire
County Council, and EGF seeks to promote the objectives of both in its work. How
do we know if we are making a difference? EGF
has done an 'impact survey', by sending home a brief questionnaire to households
of pupils who had worked with EGF. The results showed that over 80% had improved
their 'reduce, reuse and recycle' routines as a result of their children bringing
home EGF ideas. We
also get involved in other projects in partnership with schools and the local
council in Lancaster to bring in a recycling system for all schools, which will
also enable local people to recycle their paper, cans etc at school collection
centres.
