In
Bolton, we have several sites dedicated to growing
organic fruit and vegetables and helping to attract
wildlife. We work with people from all manner of backgrounds
and with varying degrees of gardening know-how. It
is also a priority to get as many schools as possible
involved so children can learn how to grow plants
and experience the taste of the freshest produce possible
and so far this has been a great success with children
trying (and enjoying) everything from peas to blueberries
to kale!
In
addition, at our site at Tonge Moor Road, we are carrying
out a companion planting scheme where we grow a mixture
of crops together that benefit each other. We are
also incorporating native flowers into our planting
schemes for the benefit of local wildlife and to assist
in pollination of our crops by attracting beneficial
insects.
The
food growing projects are a great way of learning
new skills, meeting new people, getting out in fresh
air and making a contribution to food sustainability.
