The
Ribble Valley LNR project is focusing on two former
quarry sites in Clitheroe that have been firmly established
as local nature reserves and as part of the portfolio
of Wildlife Trust sites. The reserves are at Salthill
and Cross Hill close to the edge of the town. Both
sites are owned by Ribble Valley Borough Council and
are leased to the Trust.
The
Trust is raising the profile of the reserves in the
local community by holding various events on the sites
and by use of the local media. Guided walks, fun trails,
building bat boxes are just some of the examples of
activities that are being held. This is helping to
increase awareness of the reserves and encouraging
people to visit them. Local schools are also involved
carrying out practical management work and using the
sites for activities linking into various sectors
of the curriculum. A volunteer group is being developed
to help with the management work, either with practical
tasks such as scrub control or grassland management
for example, or getting involved with important survey
work to help build up records on the flora and fauna.
A series of health walks based on the two reserves
are also being held as part of the national 'Walking
The Way to Health' campaign.
The
Trust will continue to build up links with local communities
and would be pleased to hear from other schools or
groups who think that the project could be of help
to them. Similarly it would like to encourage anyone
who feels that they may be able to help with management
work at the sites.
