the penwortham environment education centre

We deliver a variety of exciting and interactive environmental programmes to schools and communities throughout the year. Our centre has ponds, a wildlife garden, a boardwalk and bird hides. The education we provide enhances classroom learning as we use very visual and interactive ways of getting our message across. We use period costumes, props and activities to stimulate children's and adults' imaginations, often with a few surprises along the way!

General programme of schools' activities - includes pond dipping, adaptations, Earth Caretakers, Green Man's Secret. All encourage children to think about their place in the world and the impact of their actions on their local environment.
Wicked Wildlife Watch club - engaging the local community with wildlife and practical activities such as making bird boxes, minibeast hunts, finding out about other wildlife such as amphibians, bats and birds.
Vikings We take school groups back in time to work in the Viking wood for the day - but will they be sold as thralls and have to stay there forever ?
Volunteer activities - the centre holds open days for the local community to come and volunteer and participate in practical conservation activities.
Volunteer groups - the centre has a regular volunteer group from the local community who work every Wednesday on all aspects of the upkeep of the centre and its premises. They do everything from tending the garden and vegetables to woodland maintenance.
Other activities - there are other seasonal events all year round, e.g. Hallowe'en, Teddy Bears Picnic, Seed Gathering Sunday. All are ideal for local families to attend and learn more about the environment and the creatures that live there.

Current education programmes are (click for more information):

education for a greener future (EGF)
outreach programme
victorians/CVP education programme
wildlife after schools projects (W.A.S.P)

The centre, as part of the Wildlife Trust, works in partnership with National Grid to ensure all activities are well advertised and promoted to schools and the local community.

The Centre also provides training and development for teachers and community group leaders wishing to develop their skills and knowledge of the environment education field. We can also provide residential courses and weekends for community groups and business groups wanting to develop their own teams and services.
