Job Done: The Boardwalk At Brockholes Nature Reserve
Client: Forestry Commission
Outline brief: To create a uniquely designed structure to provide access across wetland, for people of all abilities
Location: The Lancashire Wildlife Trust’s Contracts Team has been fully engaged in delivering major parts of the Brockholes Nature Reserve development, off Junction 31 of the M6, at Preston. Brockholes is set to be the largest nature reserve of its kind in Europe. The Trust’s involvement has so far ranged from landscape regeneration and habitat creation to bonded recycled aggregate path works and natural play areas.
Technical summary: A restrained palette of materials was used to create the boardwalk; sustainable locally sourced green oak with handmade doweled jointing.
The result: A 50 metre all ability boardwalk and bridge across a wetland area, linking a visitor route around the site. This monumental structure is built from entirely sustainable materials and blends natural aesthetic, contemporary design and access utility.
