Job Done: Creating a ‘Pictorial’ Wildflower Meadow in Blackburn
Outline brief: To bring a rapid colourful display of wildflowers to two areas of formerly demolished terraced housing, as part of Blackburn and Darwen Council’s urban fringe, ‘green’ regeneration project.
Location: Mosley Street, Blackburn
Client: Blackburn and Darwen Council
Technical summary: Pictorial Meadows are unique colourful meadow-flower seed mixes that rapidly produce a naturally vibrant display with an extended flowering season. The dramatic, wildlife-friendly mixes contain no grass and are a blend of native and non native hardy annuals, designed to provide high quality and cost-effective flowering displays.
Excavators were used to create level ground, followed by the spreading of 340 tonnes of recycled top soil material to a depth of 20cm and then the seeds were distributed by hand. The seed bed material used on this project was sourced directly from a doorstep garden waste collection.
The Result: The Pictorial Meadow injected drama into a brown field urban landscape, creating complex and intricate pictures at the very smallest of scales.
