How to have a stress-free Christmas

This Christmas we caught up with the Myplace team who shared with us some of their top tips for getting through the festive season stress-free.

Christmas can be a stressful time. Expectations run high and often the holidays can pass us by in such a blur we are left wondering what all the worry was for in the first place.

This year, we asked our Myplace team to share with us some of their top tips for a stress-free Christmas.

If you’re feeling like Christmas is already getting the better of you, why not give a few of these a go?

Jot it down

Myplace Project Officer Claire says, “I always keep a pack of post it notes and a pen by my bed. You can guarantee that just once you've got comfy you'll start to think of all the things you need to do or things you might forget. Writing them down means you know you will remember to do them.”

Get creative

Men in Sheds Officer, Graham highlights the benefits of getting a bit creative.

“Spend wisely. Buy low cost presents that improve your local environment like native spring bulbs, native trees or shrubs, a bird nest box, a bat box or hedgehog shelter. Better still, how about building your own bird nest box, bat box or hedgehog shelter and giving them as low cost home crafted presents?”

Be kind to yourself

Myplace Officer, Emma says “It might feel like everyone else is having the best time in the world at Christmas. Don’t be judging your own experience by others. Take time out. Go for a lovely walk outdoors. Make yourself a cuppa and have a quiet 5 minutes.”

Get some fresh air

Myplace Officers Jenni and Rebecca both highlight the importance of getting outside.

Rebecca says, “I’m a big fan of getting out for some fresh air during the Christmas period, and making sure that I am still getting some exercise. A quick walk or run round my local park gives me back the perspective I need to enjoy spending quality time with loved ones I might only see a couple of times a year.”

Jenni says, “My main tip for a stress free Christmas is to take time to sweat it out. It’s easy in all of the rushing around for Christmas to forget to stop and check in with yourself.

The most effective way for me to focus my mind and feel better is to get my adrenaline up and blood pumping. By doing at least 20mins of fitness/ability appropriate exercise a day (preferably in an outdoor setting, such as a local park or nature reserve) I experience the benefits immediately.

Personally, I like to go for a run, or go horse riding, but any exercise that get your heart beating and those lungs working. Exercise gives me the chance to clear my mind, focus on my breathing and my body, then start to enjoy and notice my surroundings. Afterwards, that great feeling of a sense of achievement and raised positivity, sticks around for the rest of the day.”

Our Myplace project has teamed up with the Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust to help people discover a natural way to wellbeing.

We help people by showing them the benefits of nature, slowing down, being mindful and gaining new experiences.
