My Week of Work Experience at Lancashire Wildlife Trust

My Week of Work Experience at Lancashire Wildlife Trust

This July we were joined by Lewis Mercer for a week of work experience. Here he details what he got up to throughout his time with us!

Hello, my name is Lewis and this is my walkthrough of the week of work experience I have spent here at the wonderful Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside.

I’ve been working 9-5 throughout the week and I’m going to give a little insight on what anyone considering work experience at the Trust might expect to be doing.

Monday

On my first day I came into the LWT head office, The Barn, with the lovely Head of HR (my mum) who introduced me to the hard workers I’ll be working with for a week.

My first task was to create a staff membership campaign for an exclusive offer available to employees. I used the notes I made to create five different mind-map designs to put up around the Barn and inform staff of the offer available.

I then had a lunch break which was needed so much because I’d worked my socks off all morning!

After lunch I worked on a story around my experience with deer for the winter edition of Lapwing, which members will be able to see published around December time 2023.

Tuesday

To start Tuesday off I added the finishing touches to my poster designs and then went into a two-hour Policy and Advocacy meeting with the CEO, Tom Burditt, and other staff members such as Alan Wright, who is the Head of Communications and Campaigns. We learned about upcoming government actions that the Trust needs to be aware of.

Then with lunch eaten I continued to write my news story for Lapwing.

Wednesday

On Wednesday I went to the Brockholes nature reserve to take some pictures for the Brockholes social media pages. In the afternoon I planned out these posts within Sprout Social, the team’s social media planner, to be scheduled to come out later that same evening. You can see the pictures I took on the Brockholes Facebook, Twitter and Instagram so go and follow their pages if you haven’t already.

I of course had to have a fun break on the grounds too!

Thursday

It was a drizzly start to the day at Brockholes again, but fortunately I was inside one of the village cafes called Peckish interviewing a Wigan Greenheart Project staff member. I then had lunch and then started writing this blog you are reading right this moment!

Friday

On the last day I finished writing this blog and then started to put posters up around the office to celebrate the 20 year work anniversary of Simon Wakefield, who is the Buildings Operations Officer. In the afternoon I just helped around the office and sadly went home!

It's been a fun week's work experience spent here because I have got to see all the great people behind the scenes of the amazing work that Lancashire Wildlife Trust does. I highly recommend becoming a member just to show support and help provide funds for the trust's vital conservation work, and if you have some free time, there are lots of volunteering opportunities for you to get stuck in with.
