The Greenhouse Project: Autumn

A sign with the word 'Autumn' painted on it

Autumn

This was the first of the greenhouses to be developed and is largely given over to the production of annual vegetables such as augergines and celeriac many of which will need to be grown again from seed next spring. We aim to grow as many different types of edibles as possible so people can see and learn how many different things grow.

We have included a pond in here as well as in the outdoor forest garden area to encourage wildlife to come in to the greenhouses and create a healthy diverse environment. Having a pond is one of the best things you can do for your local wildlife as even the bees need a drink. The presence of frogs can also help deal with certain pests that can attack some of the plants we are growing.

We are growing most of the plants in a mixture of compost produced by the green waste given to recycling by residents of Blackburn with Darwen. This green waste of kitchen scraps and garden cuttings creates a lovely compost which we then mix with well-rotted manure from our friends next door at Myerscough College to produce a rich growing medium. In the longer term we are hoping to only need to use the compost that we produce on site as well as fertiliser made from nettles and comfrey leaves.Â
