Wheels for Wildlife 2007– Report and Thanks and Photo Gallery

Sunday 13 May

‘The sun shines on the righteous’ I am told. Our prayers were answered and the rain held off for most of the day giving everyone a dry, often sunny, ride, through our beautiful Lancashire countryside. The routes, through a true ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ were a very pleasant surprise to those who had not experienced the fields, woodlands and quiet country lanes that are so close to Preston.

Everyone enjoyed the day – there were thrills and spills, no broken bones, one broken crank, several sore bottoms, grins and sighs of satisfaction and no-one got completely lost! But we really did get the blood, sweat and tears from various participants. Luckily the damage was not great, other than Dan’s non-fixable crank, which meant him finishing prematurely at the Cobbled Corner café in Chipping. Oh dear, fancy having to eat cakes and drink tea while waiting to be rescued! Indeed, it seemed to be a good rendezvous for Wildlife Trust staff with our very own chief executive Anne Selby and Tim Mitcham our Head of Conservation meeting up with teams from Education for a Greener Future and the Wildlife After School Project. Kate Jackson and Rosslyn Colderley were early birds who were back at the college for lunch! Well done everyone!

Distances
Yes! I admit it, I was wrong about the distances, which are actually:

  • Chipping – 25 miles
  • Bleasdale – 32 miles
  • Trough – 55 miles

Sponsorship
Star of the day has to go to 8-year-old Harrison Hanson of Haslingden who completed the 25 mile ride to Chipping and back and raised £104 in sponsorship. WELL DONE HARRISON!

Please try and match his fundraising efforts - help us continue with our work to

  • STAND UP FOR WILDLIFE
  • CREATE WILDLIFE HAVENS
  • INSPIRE PEOPLE ABOUT THE NATURAL WORLD
  • FOSTER SUSTAINABLE LIVING

Early indications suggest we will raise £3,000 from the day – with your renewed efforts we could make it £5,000 – so go on, encourage your family, friends, neighbours and colleagues to acknowledge your achievements and donate to a very worthy cause which benefits us all.

Next Year
Yes, there is great enthusiasm from most of you to come back and do it all again in 2008, maybe with an even longer ride which qualifies as a ‘Sportive’ event – we will be in touch.

The feedback was very positive (thank you) and we will take note of the suggestions to have:

  • An optional group start to make it more sociable
  • Someone at half-way point to support and encourage you to carry on!
  • A start / finish banner or funnel – to make it more special
  • No clash with other rides

Friday was the first time I can remember leaving work for the weekend and saying “I will be glad when Monday comes! “ But actually the day was not stressful thanks to the well-oiled machinations of Ribble Valley Cycling Club and the number of helpers, which made the tasks easy – thanks to all.

Our thanks once again to sponsors
Solomon Commercials – Our ‘Flagship’ Sponsor – thanks to Michael Solomon for investing in our event – and riding the Trough route.
Preston City Council – Phil Walsh rode the Trough and brought much needed additional financial support - thank you!
Preston College – Willie Mann, Jacqui Hughes, Tracy Hulme, Geoff Snailham, Ian Stott and Christine Brierley rode the Bleasdale route – and provided the college facilities free of charge. Many thanks!
Ribble Valley Cycle Club – ‘signed’ the routes
SIS – provided GO drink for free – thanks!
Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative – gave us the goody bags, including the brilliant multi tool – wow – thank you!

So if you enjoyed the day and would like to do it all again next year please let me know so that I can pass the word back to them!

Or if you are reading this and you want to take part next time, let me know.

Wheely Good Bicycles

Laura set up Wheelygoodbicycles in 2005, as an antidote to the male-dominated world of cycling. She offers mobile sales, servicing and repairs to bike owners in the Preston/Chorley area. Laura is a fully qualified expert in keeping bikes safely on the road and deplores the throwaway attitude that sees good bikes going to the recycling centre.

Laura is offering a thirty-point pre-event scrutiny of bikes for all entrants to the Wheels for Wildlife event, at a discounted price of £5.00 per bike. If you need repairs costing over £20.00, the scrutiny comes free! Contact Laura on 07789 915 710, or log on to www.wheelygoodbicycles.co.uk well before the event on 13th May, to make sure you have time for any necessary tweeks!

Sponsorship
The Trust has teamed up with Just Giving to allow participants in the sponsored bike ride to get people to donate directly to LWT through the justgiving site. http://www.justgiving.com/lancswt/raisemoney/
