Urgent news

Will you share in our dream?

We URGENTLY need to raise £50,000 to help buy the Brockholes Quarry Wetland and protect it forever.

Brockholes is already one of the finest sites for birdwatching in the North West.

Birdwatching at the Reinstated Lagoon to the South of the Access Road

We could create a haven there for wildlife and a place for people to enjoy nature, but it is under threat of development.

We have been given the opportunity to buy the whole site, which is the size of 130 football pitches, next to J31 of the M6 at Preston. However, we can only do it if we raise £50,000 in the next four weeks.  There is a real threat that the site could be lost for wildlife unless we act now.

Brockholes could be an inspirational place to visit: a mosaic of open water, reedbed, flower-rich grassland and woodland.  It is encircled by the River Ribble, where otters are returning and adjoins the largest ancient woodland in Lancashire (also in our care) where badgers and bluebells thrive.

The site is already home to a fantastic variety of birdlife including Lapwing, Sand Martin and Kingfisher, together with more vulnerable species such as Whimbrel, Skylark and Reed Bunting.  The rich diversity of wildlife will include Great Crested Newts, bats, dragonflies and damselflies.

We will welcome visitors who share our passion for nature.  They will be encouraged to walk, cycle or perhaps even paddle a canoe to experience wildlife face to face.  A visitor centre will provide an introduction to the wonders of the reserve – a place to relax and drink in the view before exploring the nature trails.  We will create a landscape for learning where we will inspire young people to care for their environment.

The cost of buying and improving the site will be £1.5 million This will include the restoration of the wetlands, creation of ponds, seeding of meadows, planting new hedgerows and trees, making access paths and building proper birdwatching hides.

We have raised most of the money from charitable funders but we need your help to release it.   To secure it we must raise at least £50,000. This is a condition laid down by the funders and is known as “match funding”.

All the £1.5 million is dependent upon our raising this £50,000.

·                Everyone who gives to this appeal will be recorded in the ‘Roll of Honour’ to be held on site.

·                Give £100 and you will be invited to join us for a special celebration event at Brockholes.

·                A gift of £10,000 will enable you to name a birdwatching hide - after yourself or a loved one.

Please help us secure the future of Brockholes Wetland for local wildlife and for everyone who loves nature. With your help it will be the finest wildlife reserve in the North West.
