A busy start to Spring at The Greenhouse Project

A busy start to Spring at The Greenhouse Project

Rob Oakley, Gloucestershire WT

Spring is peeking it’s way around the corner (and through the soil in the form of crocuses and daffys) which means that gardeners all around have been busily preparing for the growing season.

This is certainly true for The Greenhouse Project who seem to have been busier than ever this February!

Early February saw the installation of some solar panels, which are another step toward the project being completely self sustaining. They’ve already been popular, helping to power tools, phones and even bikes for participants, staff and volunteers!

If you were tuned in to BBC Radio Lancashire on the morning of February 8th, you may have heard our very own Andy Mather on the show talking about the project and putting out a shout for some rhubarb for some new beds along the side of the greenhouses.

This is where that will be going – thanks to anyone who has donated some, and if you haven’t yet then we are definitely still accepting your rhubarb donations – drop them at Brockholes, Mere Sands Wood or Moss Bank Park and let them know that they are for The Greenhouse Project.

Rich compost in the compost bays at the greenhouses

Our compost bays have been working hard over the months, and have produced some excellent quality compost ready for this year! It’s always wonderful to be able to close the loop using our food waste to make compost which will go on to make more wonderful food.

Finally, it’s getting warm enough to be able to enjoy some sunshine as we eat our lunch, as our lovely volunteers Hazel and Dilys are demonstrating in the Forest Garden.

Happy Spring everyone!
