Supporter Story - Why we chose to adopt

David Price

Discover why local supporters are choosing to adopt red squirrels and hedgehogs through Lancashire Wildlife Trust’s Adopt a Species campaign. From heartfelt gifts to personal pledges, these stories show how adoption packs are inspiring families, supporting mental wellbeing, and helping protect endangered wildlife across Lancashire, Manchester, and North Merseyside.

Personal stories behind every adoption

Every adoption tells a story — a memory sparked, a love for nature reignited, or a simple moment of joy when a small plush animal arrives in the post. Our Adopt a Species campaign has brought together people from all walks of life who care deeply about the wildlife on their doorstep.

Here, we’re sharing the personal stories behind a few recent adoptions. Whether it was a heartfelt gift or a treat to themselves, each supporter shows how small actions can make a big impact.

🌰 Amber: A red squirrel gift for a young wildlife fan

Amber bought a red squirrel adoption pack for her 10-year-old daughter — a budding wildlife enthusiast with a very specific favourite.

Their red squirrel fascination began with a sighting at Formby Pines, and from that moment on, her daughter was completely hooked. Amber knew there could be no better gift.

The pack was a huge hit. Her daughter was excited to learn more and instantly fell in love with the soft toy and fact file. She’s already asking if there’s anything else she can adopt or explore next!

She’s absolutely obsessed with red squirrels, and this was the perfect gift — she’s already asking if there’s more to get!

🦔 Charlotte: Supporting wildlife and wellbeing

Charlotte adopted a hedgehog as a gift to herself, motivated by both her love for wildlife and her personal journey with mental health.

Nature has long been a source of comfort for Charlotte, and she saw the adoption as a way to give back to the environment that has supported her. Her nephew’s love of hedgehogs also played a role in choosing which species to adopt.

When her pack arrived, Charlotte was thrilled — especially by the educational materials and the plush hedgehog. The bookmark stood out as a thoughtful touch, particularly as she’s been reading more over the summer.

It’s such a lovely way to support wildlife, and it would make the perfect gift for any nature-loving friend or family member.

🌰 Sally: Reconnecting with red squirrels

For Sally, adopting a red squirrel was about more than just conservation — it brought back treasured childhood memories.

Growing up, she remembers feeding red squirrels in the local park and watching them scurry up her legs for nuts. These once-common encounters have become increasingly rare, and Sally feels strongly that more needs to be done to protect their future.

When her adoption pack arrived, she was excited to learn more about how projects like this are helping red squirrels slowly recover in the North-West.

I would recommend adopting a species knowing that a small contribution is aiding the survival of these animals.

🦔 Stuart: A Father’s Day gift with meaning

Stuart received his hedgehog adoption pack as a surprise from a family member — and it instantly brought a smile to his face.

The pack reminded him of the hedgehogs that once nested in his childhood garden for several years. He fondly recalls the joy of watching them explore the garden and even taking a dip in the pond now and then.

Beyond the nostalgia, the gift sparked important thoughts about the future of British wildlife. Stuart believes more people need to understand the role our gardens play in providing safe spaces for creatures like hedgehogs.

As individuals we can make a small difference, but collectively we could make a bigger impact on the protection and survival of our beloved animals.
