Lancashire Wildlife Trust is thrilled to partner with Chesnara plc to enable restoration work for birdlife at Brockholes.

A major habitat restoration project at Brockholes Nature Reserve is set to give birdlife a vital boost, thanks to new support from Chesnara plc, working in partnership with the Lancashire Wildlife Trust and Lancashire Environment Fund.

The Birdscapes project will see significant improvements to reedbeds, islands, sand martin nest banks and floating vegetated habitats across the reserve. These enhancements will create better breeding and feeding conditions for a wide range of species, including lapwing, redshank, little ringed plover, oystercatcher and sand martin, helping to secure their future in the heart of Preston.

Brockholes is one of the region’s most important nature reserves, providing a sanctuary for wildlife alongside an accessible 250 acre green space for local communities. The restoration work, which will continue through 2026, will not only strengthen habitats for birds and other wildlife but also enhance the experience for visitors, with more opportunities to connect with nature and see thriving birdlife up close.

The project has been made possible with the support of Chesnara plc, a Preston-based life and pensions consolidator operating across the UK and Europe.

Chesnara CEO, Steve Murray said:

"We know that healthy communities and economies rely on a future where nature thrives. Our lands, waters and wildlife are critical in the fight against climate change and more must be done to protect them. In line with Chesnara’s commitment to become a sustainable group, we’re delighted to be working with the Lancashire Wildlife Trust and support the Brockholes Nature Reserve habitat restoration project. As a Preston based business, we’re proud to support positive change for our local environment."

The work forms part of a wider ambition to restore and enhance natural habitats across the North West region, ensuring places like Brockholes continue to support both wildlife and people for generations to come.

Lorna Bennet, Brockholes Reserve Manager and pioneer of this project said:

“The work we do will help nature thrive whilst also providing a well maintained local and accessible green space for communities to enjoy. This project will make a huge difference to the reserve, creating a better habitat for birds and other wildlife. Support like this is vital in helping us turn plans into real, lasting impact on the ground.”

By investing in habitat restoration, Chesnara plc is helping to demonstrate how local businesses can play a meaningful role in protecting the natural environment, while strengthening the connection between people, place and wildlife.
