June photography competition results

June photography competition results

The UK is home to an unbelievable 59 species of butterfly and over 2,500 different types of moth, so why not make them the stars of our June photography competition?

They might come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but the butterflies and moths of Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside have more in common than you might think. For example, did you know that the patterns and colours on these insects' wings are made by thousands of tiny, delicate, overlapping scales?

It was wonderful to see the beauty of these creatures captured in the entries to our June photography competition, 'Butterflies and Moths'. From fuzzy speckled wood butterflies to vibrant cinnabar moths, our judge loved looking through your images.

It goes without saying that it was extremely difficult to choose this month's winner, but after much deliberation we chose Ken Hayes’ ‘Meadow Brown Butterfly’ as the winning image.

Meadow brown butterfly

Ken Hayes

Our judge adored this image and said that, "The rich tapestry of colour here is delightful. Despite their commonality, meadow brown butterflies never fail to turn heads with their striking pattern and rich colour."

Green veined white

Mark Lazenby

In second place is Mark Lazenby’s ‘Green Veined White Butterfly’. Our judge commented that, "The ability to capture the prominent green veins of this butterfly is breath-taking. Moreover, given that this species usually prefers to inhabit the damp and lush areas of hedgerows and meadows, the fact that the vibrant pigmentation and texture of this butterfly has been captured with such luminosity is outstanding."

Elephant hawk moth

Tony Beyga

Finally, in third place is Tony Beyga’s ‘Elephant Hawkmoth’. Our judge noted said that, "This striking image of a delightful elephant hawkmoth perfectly captures the beauty and delicate nature of this special little creature. With their golden olive and vibrant pink colouration, the elephant hawkmoth certainly dispels the myth that moths are dull and boring."

The winner will be contacted via email with details of how to redeem their £100 optics voucher prize. Additionally, all winning photos will be displayed in our visitor centres for everyone to see.
