What to see and do in September

September marks the beginning of autumn and a time of transformation in the natural world - here's a look at some of the exciting events and wildlife spectacles to look out for this month.

September is here, bringing with it cooler weather and shorter days - but this won't stop us making the most of the great outdoors and getting out into nature! Here are some of our top suggestions for things to see and do this month.

Get outdoors with your Nature Tots

Come and join us at our pre-school sessions that let your little ones get in touch with nature and explore at Lunt Meadows.

Our Nature Tots sessions are suitable for children aged 15 months - 5 years. Each session has a different theme and activities include nature art, story time, bug hunts, games, crafts and much more!

Take a stroll in autumnal woodlands

Autumn is a time of transformation in our woodlands, as the leaves begin to change to vibrant shades of yellow, orange and red. A clear early autumn day is the perfect opportunity to take a stroll through the woods and enjoy the vibrant colours of the season.

It’s all change in the bird world! With the arrival of autumn, many species start to leave the UK for warmer shores and are replaced by other migrant birds seeking solace from colder winters overseas. Learn all about the wonderful world of fungi

As well as the changing colours of the leaves, another of autumn's most colourful and fascinating sights is fungi.

There are over 15,000 species of fungi in the UK, and many of these can be seen in our region - in fact, over 200 species have been recorded at Mere Sands Wood Nature Reserve. Discover nine of our favourite fungi that you may be able to spot on your next walk!

Support a wild comeback

September marks the launch of our Three Species, One Wild Comeback appeal - a chance to make a real, lasting difference to the future of three unique and rare species.

We're raising vital funds to help us bring back the large heath butterfly, the bog bush cricket and the white-faced darter dragonfly, three invertebrates who used to be commonplace in our region before the destruction of their peatland habitats, which has left them on the brink.

We've been working to restore peatland habitats across our region, paving the way for these wonderful species to make their comeback - but we need your help to make it happen.
