For me, it's officially the start of summer when the cattle arrive at Lunt Meadows. In April, five rather large and four dinky brown and white cattle hurried out of a truck and excitedly ran into their new home. This friendly bunch are important four-legged members of our conservation grazing department. These cattle will be spending the season grazing the grasslands on the reserve, improving the habitats for wildlife and visitors alike.
Last year, we had six males - Ulrik, Uber, Ulysses, Uther, Uhtred and, leader of the herd, Usain, This summer, we have a mixed herd of nine cattle, with four females and five males. Three of the girls and one boy were born in 2024, so they are only very young, while the others were born in 2022 (the one with the horns is the older girl). Their names are on their ear tags, and are Yonder, Yia, Yossi, Yoko, Wilson, Woad, Wasp, Wilko and Wendy.
At the start of May a second herd, four male steers, were added to the site too, having previously been on the sand dunes in Ainsdale. At 6 years old, they are much bigger than the cattle in the other herd, but equally as docile.
