When the squirrel pox virus reached Formby in late 2007, there were no obvious signs of change. The pinewoods looked the same, and people continued to walk the paths hoping to catch sight of a red squirrel. At first, the difference was subtle, but over time sightings became less frequent, and red squirrels began to slowly disappear.
Squirrel pox is one of the greatest threats facing red squirrels today. Carried and transmitted without symptoms by invasive non-native grey squirrels, the virus can spread through shared habitats, feeders, and equipment, circulating quietly before the problem is visible.
For red squirrels, there is no natural immunity and little chance of survival.
