Delivering High-Integrity Biodiversity Net Gain in Lancashire & Greater Manchester
We are a trusted provider of statutory and voluntary BNG units, from Lancashire Wildlife Trust and our Wigan Greenheart partnership.
What is Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)?
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requires developers to deliver at least 10% net gain in biodiversity compared to pre-development conditions, measured using DEFRA’s Statutory Biodiversity Metric.
BNG can be achieved by restoring or creating habitats on-site or off-site, with Government credits available only as a last resort. It must follow the mitigation hierarchy (avoid, minimise, restore, offset) before being applied. Done well, BNG protects key nature sites and provides new funding for nature’s recovery.
The requirement became mandatory in England for Town and Country Planning Act developments in February 2024, extended to small sites in April 2024, and will apply to Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) from late 2025.

"When offsetting is the only option, our units provide the highest-quality solution, backed by rigorous ecological standards, and measurable biodiversity outcomes; giving developers confidence and compliance in one trusted package." James Hall, Head of Green Finance at LWT
BNG and your Business
Over the past decade, the call for urgent action on nature recovery has become impossible to ignore. Here in the North West, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) offers developers not just a legal requirement but a chance to lead.
BNG, introduced in 2024, is the biggest shift in planning rules for decades, and a credible new funding stream for nature. With housing targets rising to 370,000 new homes annually, those who go beyond the minimum 10% net gain by offsetting impacts or investing in voluntary units can gain faster planning approval, reduce long-term risks, and build stronger reputations with communities and investors.
