Conservation grazing project - FAQs

Here we answer some of the most commonly asked questions about our conservation grazing project. We are raising funds for this project as part of Big Give's Green Match Fund 2025.

You can also watch the video below where Lucy O'Reilly, our Conservation Grazing Officer, explains more about this practice and the role that our grazing cattle play in helping boost biodiversity at our nature reserves.

What is conservation grazing?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is our Conservation Grazing Project?

Conservation grazing is our use of land mammals, such as cattle, goats and sheep, in the practical management of our nature reserves. Conservation grazing creates a mosaic of habitats by controlling overgrowth, reducing invasive species, and improving soil and plant health. This natural management technique directly supports a diverse range of species and enhances the ecological value of our nature reserves. By integrating them into our existing herd, we can scale up our sustainable land management practices.

Every donation made to our project through The Big Give will be matched up to £5,000!

What will the funds contribute towards?

  • Increase our herd capacity to achieve our conservation objectives at multiple nature reserves across Lancashire, Manchester & North Merseyside.

  • Equip our existing sites with the appropriate infrastructure we need with a bigger herd to ensure they are comfortable, happy, healthy and can graze the land.

  • Expand the range of locations whereby grazing can be employed as a sustainable land management tool.

What species will be supported by this project?

Lancashire’s vital habitats, such as wetlands, grasslands, and heathlands, are at risk of ecological degradation due to overgrowth and invasive plant species. We have seen on sites where we have used this effective land management technique that these habitats can support species like lapwings, snipe, otters, and many kinds of grass, flowers and invertebrates.

What is the Big Give?

Big Give is an organisation which supports charities all over the world by running annual campaigns where they match all charitable donations for a certain period of time.

"Imagine if your generous gift could have double the impact on the causes you care about. Well, that’s exactly why we exist. Whatever your passion, whatever cause you support, we can help double your donation to make double the difference." - Big Give

Big Give's Green Match Fund campaign runs from 22nd-29th April this year, and is designed to support charities like us who are working to combat environmental issues. Every penny that we raise for this project via the Green Match Fund this year will be matched up to £5,000, meaning that your donation, no matter how big or small, will have twice the impact and help us towards our grand total of £10,000!

What are the collars on their necks?

We have a blog here with lots of information around the "No Fence" collars our grazing cattle can be seen wearing.
