Bill Jones

With the end of summer drawing nearer, our reserves have been awash with people making the most of the good weather. In turn, we've received a marvellous selection of entries from right across our region, and its many spectacular nature reserves.

This month’s photography competition theme was 'Dragonflies and Damselflies'. We received so many terrific photographs that capture the majestic beauty of these intricate and delicate creatures. From impactful images of dragonflies perched on the water’s edge, to damselflies radiating in the resplendent summer sun, we're overjoyed that so many people are continuing to appreciate nature and get involved in the photo competition.

Of 70 fabulous entries, and after much deliberation, Bill Jones' ‘Common Darter’ was awarded first place.

Common Darter

Our judge commented that, "The outstanding level of detail captured in this image is truly breath-taking. The vivid colour, offset against the more muted tones of the natural flora, makes this image really stand out from the crowd."

Louise Bolton

In second place is Louise Bolton’s ‘Little Dragonfly’. Our judge noted that, "The depth and composition illustrated within this delightful image is outstanding. In addition, this photograph, demonstrates the spectacular level of intricacy and texture present within these spectacular insects. This is a wonderful example of the joy dragonflies can bring to people of all ages."

Blue - Tailed Damselfly

Andrew Butler

In third place is Andrew Butler’s ‘Blue-tailed Damselfly’. Our judged loved this image, stating that, "The presence and timing required to capture this eye-catching photograph is phenomenal. The depth and detail demonstrate a remarkable level of skill which deserves recognition."

The winner will be contacted via email with details on how to redeem their £100 optics voucher prize for in focus. Additionally, all winner’s photos will be displayed at our visitor centres, for everyone to see.
