Based within Bolton’s iconic Moss Bank Park, The Hive offers a unique space made up of a series of gardens adorned with natural play equipment. The Hive is an brilliant outdoor site for inspiring young minds with lots of opportunities for outdoor learning and natural play.

Expert team of environmental education specialists

Your visit at The Hive at Moss Bank Park will be run by LWT Education Team, a highly skilled and experienced team of environmental education specialists who pride themselves on providing exciting and innovative programmes that inspire children and young people about the natural world. We run Education visits at a variety of sites across the region (Brockholes Nature Reserve, Mere Sands Wood, Bolton ERC, The Hive and Lunt Meadows), as well as outreach sessions, Forest School programmes, Forest School training and outdoor learning CPD training for schools/ groups.

Facilities

You will have an enthusiastic and experienced member of the Education team dedicated to your school visit at The Hive. They will be available throughout your visit, guiding the children on an outdoor natural adventure.

Our school visits at The Hive are fully outdoor visits and we are able to take school groups of up to 35 children (maximum) at The Hive. We have an outdoor classroom (fitted with seating circle) and accessible pathways through the site. On a school visit led by the Education team, the outdoor classroom at the top of the site can be closed off for your school group when the site is open to the public. There is no access to an indoor space available on site, however toilets are available in Moss Bank Park café.

Group sizes

At The Hive, we are able to take school groups of up to 35 children (maximum) each day for our Education Officer Led Education visits. 

A huge selection of activities

We are able to run Education Officer Led Visits for Primary Schools at The Hive.

We offer a wide range of educational workshops that cater for young people, including Minibeasts, Plants, Bushcraft/Survival, Sensory Hive Adventure and much more. The workshops available at The Hive are listed further down the page, by age group. 

All our workshops are fully risk assessed and suit and complement the goals of the National Curriculum. 

We offer two types of Education visits at The Hive (with different costs):

  • Education Officer led visits (full day) with two workshops of your choice

     

  • Outdoor Learning Experience visits at The Hive - funded half day visit. We are able to offer a limited number of funded Outdoor Learning Experience visits at The Hive. This is funded by The Inflexion Foundation and is only available to schools located in the Greater Manchester area. Please note that we only offer these funded visits between September – March. These funded visits are not available in April, May, June or July. For more information click here.

     

Timings of day

For our Education Officer led visits (full day) we run two workshops in a day visit (morning and afternoon), school groups arrive at The Hive from 10am and leave around 2pm-2.45pm.

For our Outdoor Learning Experience visits at The Hive - funded half day visits we run one workshop either in the morning (e.g. 10am – 12pm/12.30pm) or afternoon (e.g. 12.30pm – 2pm/2.45pm). 

Accessibility

Wherever possible we try to make our activities as inclusive as possible. We are usually able to accommodate accessibility requirements at The Hive.

There is a path which goes up to our education area in The Hive which is accessible for wheelchairs. There is an area of woodchip in our education area and we can help to assist to ensure that the wheelchair can get into the area if required. (We do use this area with groups with prams/pushchairs.)
