Educational Visits at Lunt Meadows Nature Reserve

School visits at Lunt Meadows Nature Reserve

Lunt Meadows is a wetland nature reserve situated on the banks of the River Alt in North Merseyside. Doubling up as a flood storage reservoir, it is home to a wonderful variety of bird life. It is also a fascinating archaeological site and home to one of just a few surviving Mesolithic settlements, providing an inspiring backdrop to learn about Mesolithic history.

Why choose Lunt Meadows for your school visit?

Lunt Meadows is the ideal place to visit for:

  • workshops based on the stone age, habitats, rivers and much more
  • perfect location for schools based in Sefton, Liverpool and surrounding areas
  • groups of up to 35 children per day

Expert team of environmental education specialists

Your visit at Lunt Meadows Nature Reserve will be run by LWT Education Team, a highly skilled and experienced team of environmental education specialists who pride themselves on providing exciting and innovative programmes that inspire children and young people about the natural world. We run Education visits at a variety of sites across the region (Brockholes Nature Reserve, Mere Sands Wood, Bolton ERC, The Hive and Lunt Meadows), as well as outreach sessions, Forest School programmes, Forest School training and outdoor learning CPD training for schools/ groups.

Facilities

When booking a school visit led by our Education team, your school will have the use of 'Hootlet Roost' - the Classroom in the Learning Centre. You will have an enthusiastic and experienced member of the Education team dedicated to your group throughout your visit.

Group sizes

At Lunt Meadows Nature Reserve, we are able to take school groups of up to 35 children (maximum) each day for our Education Officer Led Education visits.

A huge selection of activities

Previously heavily farmed arable land the reserve now functions as a flood storage reservoir for the Environment Agency. As well as a wetland nature reserve, Lunt Meadows is a fascinating archaeological site home to one of just a few surviving Mesolithic settlements.

The variety of habitats and fascinating history means we are able to support a range of learning outcomes at Lunt Meadows. We are able to run Education Officer Led Visits for a wide variety suitable for all age ranges from Early Years Foundation Stage to A-Level and beyond.

We offer a wide variety of workshops for educational visits including Habitats, Minibeasts, Pond Dipping, Stone Age, Rivers and Environmental Art. The workshops available at Lunt Meadows are listed further down the page, by age group.

All our workshops are fully risk assessed and suit and complement the goals of the National Curriculum.

A full day of activity

School groups can arrive at Lunt Meadows from 10am and leave around 2pm-2.45pm.

We will tailor your visit around your arrival and departure time.

Accessibility

In terms of accessibility, wherever possible we try to make our activities as inclusive as possible. However, due to the nature of the terrain at Lunt Meadows, we wouldn’t currently recommend this site for wheelchair users. This is because of the uneven paths and terrain which would make it extremely difficult for wheelchair users to move around the site for the workshop activities.

If you have a wheelchair user in your group, you may be interested to know that our team also run school visits at Brockholes Nature Reserve (Preston); Mere Sands Wood (Rufford) and The Hive at Moss Bank Park (Bolton), and these sites are more accessible.

Access for coaches

We have coach/minibus parking available at Lunt Meadows.

Education visit costs

The cost of all our Education Officer led visits can be found on our how to book page
