Photography Competition Results - October 2025

Pat Aitchison

The results are in for October's photography competition.

Autumn is now in full swing and all around us our landscapes have transformed.

Our forests have become decorated in beautiful orange and brown hues, fungi have emerged from the damp ground below and wildlife has slowed down, preparing for the cold winter that is on its way.

The theme for October’s photography competition was’ Forests, foliage and fungi’. From the beautiful colours of Autumn foliage to wildlife that can be spotted in our forests and even the magnificent fungi kingdom in all its beauty, the entries this month have been outstanding!

The winner for October’s photography competition, chosen via our public vote, is… Pat Aitchison!

Red Squirrel taken at Freshfield Dune Heath - Oct 25 photo competition

Pat Aitchison

This beautiful little guy captured the hearts of our voters and it’s easy to see why! With the forest as its backdrop this marvellous Red Squirrel was captured within the trees at Freshfield Dune Heath. These naturally shy creatures are often difficult to spot, which makes the clarity and details of this image even more impressive.

One voter added that ‘it takes great skill to be able to photograph a squirrel!’ with another explaining that ‘getting a Red Squirrel to stay in one place long enough to photograph is not easy!’.

Runner up

Our runner up this month is Rachael Carroll.

To see this many Sulphur Tufts in one place is truly a sight to see. Taken at Brockholes Nature Reserve, the composition and detail of the vast display of fungi in this photograph is wonderful.

One voter added that ‘the clarity of this picture is phenomenal with the contrast of the fading out’ with another adding that this photograph is a ‘great display of fungi’.

Feeling inspired? Why not enter next month's competition!

The way our landscapes change at this time of year is truly a sight to behold! From golden woodlands as they shed their leaves ready for the winter months, the first frosts of the season making the ground glisten in the early morning sun, or even the carpet of leaves covering the ground. It is a wonderful time of year.

November's theme is 'Seasonal transformations', and we'd love to see your interpretations.
