School Grounds: Wildflower Meadows

Chai Centre wildflower meadow

Wildflower meadows not only look beautiful, but they also provide habitats for a broad mix of species. Pollinating insects are attracted by the flowers, which in turn attract birds which feed on both insects and wildflower seeds.

Wildflower meadows are also rich foraging grounds for amphibians, mammals and other invertebrates and they make the perfect companion to a wildlife pond.

Features of our wildflower meadows

We source the right native seed mix for your soil type to ensure success. The spoil from lifting the turf to create your meadow can be piled into mounds and planted with butterfly and insect friendly species, whilst scarecrows and bird scarers can be created by pupils to keep the birds from eating freshly sown wildflower seeds.

If you don't have much space, consider raised beds/planters with wildflower sees or a selection of insect friendly plants.

Huge gains for nature can be made even with the most modest of interventions.
