About the event
As darkness falls over Brockholes, join us on our floating visitor village for a celebration of winter. Inspired by the ancient Roman festival of Saturnalia, our Winter Fayre this year will feature fire and festivities as we celebrate the changing of the seasons with Roman history, Christmas magic, live music, fire and lots of family fun!
Join us for a spectacular evening, packed with activities, entertainment and festive experiences for all ages. Explore our Christmas market, enjoy traditional family shows, meet Father Christmas and discover the fascinating world of the Romans with our special guests from the Roman Military Research Society. Soak in the cosy atmosphere of our bonfire and join us in a torchlit procession to close the night.
Your ticket includes all the fun and entertainment throughout the evening!
What's On?
Roman Games, Fashion, Armour and Military Displays
Discover the world of Ancient Rome as the Roman Military Research Society take you back in time with stalls showing artifacts and live demonstrations. Immerse yourself in the sights and stories of the Roman festival of Saturnalia, celebrating the changing of the seasons.
Free Roman Citizen and Legion Training School
Ever wanted to become a Roman Legionary? Children can take part in a special, hands-on Roman training session led by our Roman reenactors. Learn some basic drills, get to grips with your very own sword and shield, and receive a certificate of Roman Citizenship!
These sessions are FREE but must be booked in advance as we have limited places available. There are four scheduled sessions at 5:00pm, 5:30pm, 6:00pm and 6:30pm, this can booked alongside your entry tickets.
Meet Father Christmas
Meet Father Christmas, enjoy a festive photo opportunity and soak up a traditional Christmas atmosphere!
Family Shows and Entertainment
There is plenty to keep little ones entertained throughout the evening including:
- Punch and Judy shows
- Children's magic shows
- Animal balloon making
- Face painting
- Cookie decorating
- Traditional carnival games with guaranteed prizes
Unlimited Marshmallow Roasting
Gather around for a delicious festive treat! Enjoy unlimited marshmallow roasting as part of your ticket, perfect for adding a little extra magic to your winter evening.
Live Music and Carnival Drumming
Enjoy live music throughout the evening including a headline performance from the brilliant Batala Samba Reggae Carnival Drumming Band! Expect infectious rhythms, vibrant carnival energy and a fantastic atmosphere as performers lead celebrations into the night.
Look out for our full-size musical calliope adding to the festival atmosphere!

Browse a wonderful selection of local, handmade crafts and gifts at our Christmas market.
Bonfire and Torchlit Procession
Our spectacular bonfire will be lit at around 7pm as Father Christmas and our brilliant Roman reenactors introduce the Roman festival of Saturnalia. Join in the countdown as the Romans light the bonfire (potentially with a flaming bow and arrow).
At the end of the night, our Roman guests will lead a magnificent torchlit procession, accompanied by live musicians!

Important Booking Information
- Planning to attend Roman Citizen and Legion Training School? You must book a FREE ticket in addition to your entry tickets upon booking. Places are limited to 40 children per session.
- Not attending a Roman Citizen and Legion Training Session? We recommend booking an entry time from 6:00pm to help manage arrivals and make the most of your evening.
- What is included in the ticket? All advertised activities, family shows, live performances, unlimited marshmallow roasting and access to Christmas Markets. Children's tickets also include 3 x free traditional games tokens with guaranteed prizes.
- No prams or pushchairs will be permitted on the village due to limited space. A designated parking area will be provided.
From Roman warriors and festive family entertainment to live carnival drumming, marshmallow roasting and a spectacular bonfire, this is a Winter Celebration with a difference.

Know before you go
Dogs
Brockholes is home to a large variety of wonderful wildlife including lots of bird species, insects and mammals including foxes and roe deer. To protect the wildlife on the reserve, we do ask that visitors do not bring dogs onto the reserve unless they are a service dog.
