Supporter Story - Protecting wildlife through a lens

Delphine Taylor

Wildlife photographer Delphine transformed her passion for capturing local wildlife into a fundraiser for Lancashire Wildlife Trust. By selling her photographs within her community, she raised funds to help protect wildlife habitats while inspiring others to discover the incredible species living on their doorstep.

More than just a photograph

For Delphine, wildlife photography is about more than capturing beautiful images.

Through hours spent observing wildlife, she has witnessed both the beauty of the natural world and the challenges many species face as habitats become increasingly fragmented.

One example that stands out is a family of deer she regularly sees crossing busy roads in search of food and shelter. More recently, she watched a family of short-eared owls lose a place they had called home after long grass on the edge of a field was cut back.

Experiences like these strengthened her appreciation for the work of Lancashire Wildlife Trust and inspired her to find a way to help. By selling her wildlife photographs within her local community, Delphine went on to raise £190 to support wildlife conservation and habitat protection.

While photographing buzzards one day, Delphine was approached by a young boy and his mother who were curious about what she was photographing.

Although she hadn't captured the image she was hoping for that day, she showed them some of her previous photographs and later posted a print through their door.

The next time she saw the boy's mother, she learned he had framed the photograph and proudly displayed it at home.

That simple moment sparked an idea.

Realising that many people rarely get the chance to see wildlife up close, Delphine decided to share her photography with others while raising funds for Lancashire Wildlife Trust.

It felt like taking photographs of the animals was me and the animals working together to raise awareness of the importance of protecting their habitat.

Sharing wildlife with the community

With a collection of photographs ready to share, Delphine began selling prints within her local community to raise funds for Lancashire Wildlife Trust.

The response exceeded all expectations.

Many people were fascinated by the images and surprised to discover that the wildlife featured in the photographs could be found locally. From birds of prey to mammals and wetland species, her photography helped reveal a side of the natural world that often goes unnoticed.

The generosity shown by her community was equally inspiring. For Delphine, one of the most rewarding aspects of the fundraiser was seeing how eager people were to support wildlife when given the opportunity.

Choosing a favourite wildlife photograph is no easy task when each image often comes with its own story.

One memory that remains particularly special for Delphine is spending time observing a family of wild rabbits.

Lying quietly at a respectful distance and remaining completely still, she watched young rabbits bouncing, exploring and playing together, completely unaware of her presence.

These are the moments she enjoys photographing most.

Could your passion help wildlife too?

Delphine's story is a wonderful reminder that fundraising doesn't always mean taking on a marathon or organising a large event.

Sometimes it can be as simple as sharing a hobby, skill or passion with others.

By combining her love of wildlife photography with a desire to make a difference, Delphine not only raised funds for wildlife conservation but also helped people discover and appreciate the incredible species living around them.

For anyone considering fundraising for nature, her advice is simple:

"Do it! In any way possible. Every little helps."

Whether you enjoy photography, baking, crafting, gardening, running or bringing people together in your community, your passion could help create a wilder future for wildlife.
